Blue & Gold Breakfast

Tips for a successful Blue & Gold Breakfast:

  • Start preparing at least 1 1/2 hours before the event start time
  • Cook as much food in the ovens as you can.  Eggs and sausages can all be made in the oven, using large “hotel pans” if available.
  • This recipe for oven-cooked scrambled eggs was very successful, and easy to prepare

  • Suggested menu:
    • Pancakes with butter and syrup – if using pancake mix, check the preparation directions and make sure you have everything you’ll need, or, just make sure to buy mix that requires water only
    • Sausages – buy more than you think you’ll need, as these are very popular and go quickly.  Alternatively, enforce a per-person quota.
    • Eggs
    • Fruit – get something that’s easy to prepare, like grapes and strawberries, or buy pre-prepared fruit
    • Juice
    • Coffee – provide sugar, and creamer
  • Suggested amounts of food per person
    • Attendence is usually between 80-120 people
    • Pancakes – 3 per person
    • Sausages – 3 per person
    • Eggs – 1 1/2 per person
  • Be sure to account for allergies and other food preferences – if possible, include gluten-free pancakes, vegetarian “sausages”, and turkey sausages (for those who do not eat pork)
  • The troop has two electric griddles that can be used if needed, however, they are slow compared to using stove-top griddles.  Ask your den if they have stove-top griddles that they can bring.
  • Make sure to remind attendees to bring their mess kits to reduce waste, which will also make clean up quicker
  • Have extra paper plates, utensils, and cups on hand, as there will be people who will forget their mess kits
  • Get a PA system for announcements, Friends of Scouting pitch, Troop presentations, etc
  • Typical special guests: Troops 6, 19, 24, Sea Scouts, MSDC Friends of Scouting team
