February Announcements

Scout Sunday/Epworth Methodist Church

Join us on February 11th at Epworth Church (
1953 Hopkins St.) for Scout Sunday.  Note that this is separate from the Scout Sunday that just occurred at Mary Magdalen.   The service begins at 10:00 am, please arrive in uniform at9:45AM to greet guests and parishioners.  Scout Sunday is an annual service to recognize the contributions of youth and adults to Scouting, along with our connection to Epworth, our chartering organization.  It would be great to have a good turn-out for Epworth which has greatly supported us.  Class A uniforms are requested.

Blue & Gold Pancake Breakfast; No February Pack meeting

Please join us, Saturday February 24th 9:30-11:30AM, for our Blue & Gold Pancake Breakfast.  Webelos Den 5 is hosting our annual celebration for the founding of Cub Scouts this year at Church of the Magdelen/Parish Hall.  Cubmaster Doug will give a Friends of Scouting presentation.    Friends of Scouting is our annual fundraiser to support the Herms District and Mount Diablo Silverado Council.  Also, be sure to bring your mess kit (Cup, plate, utensils) and wear your Class A uniform.  There is no Pack meeting in February.

Den Meetings

Dens continue to meet in February. Please check with your Den Leader if you have questions about your monthly meeting.

February outing/Pack Hike at Briones

Join us on Saturday February 10 at Briones Regional Park.  Our Hike Master Ethan Ligon will lead us on a hike of about 3.5 miles up to Russell Peak which has great views.  We will meet at the trail head at 11 am.  That will get us to the peak at around 12:30 for lunch.  Be sure to bring your own, lunch, sun screen and water.  I will send a follow up email later this week for specific details on where to meet.

 Pinewood Derby Workshops

Pinewood Derby kits and race rules were distributed at the Holiday Potluck.  Our Wooden Windows workshop is February 17th, 10AM-12 Noon at the Wooden Windows Shop at 849 29th St, Oakland (cutting/shaping the car, sanding, and polishing the wheel axles).  The fine-tuning workshop (add or subtract weight, smooth/polishing/install wheels and axles, test race track) is March 3, 11AM-1PM at Church of the Magdelen/Parish Hall.   Pack 30’s 58th Annual Pinewood Derby is March 17th, 1-4PM at Sports Basement, Berkeley.  John Canny, our Pinewood Derby Chair, could use your help as a race day volunteer.  Also, contact John if you have questions about the rules, workshops or kits.

Herms Day Camp/Save the Date

The 2018 Herms Day Camp is scheduled for June 25-29th this year, 9:00AM-3:30PM.  Registration costs around $150 and Scouts have an awesome time participating in outdoor activities, archery and BB guns.  Any Scout going into 1st-5th grade next year are welcome to attend (1st graders must have a buddy on site).   The Day Camp is all volunteer effort and they are always looking for help. As a volunteer, you will be helping to make camp an amazing experience for the youth. Not only that, but as a volunteer you can bring your other children to camp with you.

CA Academy of Sciences

The California Academy of Sciences offers Scout families a 15% discount.  The Academy is a great place for Den or family outings.  It is an excellent location to complete advancement and awards (e.g. NOVA).  For more information visit www.calacademy.org/etickets2  Sales Code Scouts.

Yours In Scouting,

Assistant Cubmaster Jim
